Troutbagger Farm

Over the past 15 years, Troutbagger Farm has become one of the top trout venues in the country.

After many successful years on my commercial charter boat, the Carpetbagger, I came home one day and told my wife, “That’s it, I am selling the boat”, she exclaimed, “You, selling the boat??”, “Yup”, I said, “I’m tired of killing fish!”. I sold the boat and bought a farm in Nottingham Road area and called it, Troutbagger!

Troutbagger farm is set in peaceful surroundings on a small farm, 12kms from central Nottingham Road, 4kms from the N3 / Nottingham Road interchange on the Curry’s Post road (P165). Over the past 15 years, it has become one of the top trout venues in the country. Fishing is in two dams, one with trout only and one with trout and bass. I introduced a freshwater shrimp and a natal lionhead minnow to the dams (live food), the rest is history. We have self-catering cottages and allow day fishermen.

Big fish are common every season – the fish are longer and are mean fighters (no tapered leaders allowed, 10lb minimum leader). Our biggest trout to date 7,4kgs (just over 16 lbs), 84cm long and in great condition.  Lots of 5 to 6,5kg fish have been taken over the years (I always say a 10lb trout is like a grander marlin).

Our bottom dam has mixed trout, bass and bluegill (and all the other shrimps etc). They do very well together and our biggest bass to date is 6,1kg.

Watch what it’s like to go fishing at Troutbagger Farm, for the cook they made a simple trout on the braai.
