Chinese seven spice calamari

An easy and delicious recipe.

  • 1kg calamari rings
  • 300g plain flour
  • 100g Mazina
  • 200ml sparkling soda water
  • 5 tbs chinese five spice
  • 3 lemons
  • 100ml Helmans mayonnaise
  • 100g crushed garlic
  • 2 lemons to garnish
  • 1 bunch of chopped parsley


  • Mix the soda water mazina and chinese 7 spice together to form a batter.
  • Set aside 200g of flour to dust the calamari in before dipping into the batter.
  • Deep fry the calamari in hot oil till golden brown.
  • Blend the 2 tsp of chinese spice into the mayonnaise with 2 tbls of finely chopped sushi ginger and crushed garlic.
  • Plate with some lemons and serve
